Basel museumsnacht

A couple of weeks ago, we bundled ourselves against the cold and headed out on the town with a couple of friends for the Basel Museum Night (the one night a year that all the museums in Basel are open until 2 am, with one entrance fee). In about 5 hours, we only managed to make it to 3 museums (hah!) – our favourite of which was the Basler Papiermühle (paper mill). Contrary to what the name suggests, the mill doesn’t only make paper – it’s also a fully functioning letterpress printery.. they even cast their own lead letters! Totally awesome if you ask me :)

hello love…

loveleafValentines Day doesn’t mean much to me, but we saw this leaf while we were walking in the forest the other day and I thought it was appropriate – even if I am a day late! I also thought this might be a good time to restart the blog after a rather long holiday, part of which was spent at home in Australia.. but I’ll post more about that later.

Days with my father

If you haven’t heard of Days with my father yet – I would recommend having a look. It’s an incredibly touching collection of photographs by Philip Toledano of his father. It’s definitely worth taking the time to read the text that goes with the images, it gives funny and sometimes sad insight into growing old. The website is also being made into a book that will be available in June next year.

Lost

Um.. it seems that I’ve lost my blogging mojo. Any ideas how to get it back? I tried taking some time out to re-focus but instead, i just forgot about it.

It would appear to go hand-in-hand with losing my mobile/garland mojo. A few weeks ago a florist down the road agreed to put some of my mobiles and garlands into her shop, which was exciting news, but when I handed them over a week later, I didn’t get the reaction I’d hoped for and left feeling really discouraged. Mojo = squashed. I know I shouldn’t give up so easily, and I don’t plan to, but maybe I need to back away from it for a while?

I really want to get my motivation back soon.. so please tell me how!! Perhaps a nice long holiday in Australia will do the trick ;)

Mixing it up a little

just cosmos

I have decided to start two new weekly segments here on this neck of the woods… hooray! The first, starting now, will be called Fancy That and will be a carefully compiled collection of things that I’m fancying this week. My obsessions change daily, so this way I can keep track!

The second, inspired+admired, as I’m sure you can guess, will feature someone or something that’s got me all excited and inspired and the like – and in turn, maybe you can be inspired too!

If you have any tips or advice for my new segments, feel free to share!

Sorted.

I have a bit of a soft spot for colours sorted into gradients, so you can understand my excitement upon seeing these perfectly-sorted draws! They belong to the workroom of our lovely Swiss friend Maryline, who is an extremely gifted quilter (and sorter by the looks of it)! Glad to know I’m not the only one :)

Bloggy holiday

So it would seem that I’ve been on a bit of a blogging holiday lately! My apologies for the lack of posts, it’s been a crazy month.

September was the month for visitors here, with Dave’s parents, my parents, and my sister all arriving in Europe for a holiday. This was a real treat for us, because we hadn’t seen most of them (Dave’s Dad being the exception) since we left Australia almost a year-and-a-half ago.

We had an amazing month tripping around and spending as much time as possible with the people we miss the most. Sadly, everyone has gone home now and we’re back into routine… boo. On the plus side, Autumn has arrived… hooray!

I’ve also been keeping busy creating some more mobiles and garlands, and now just need some better weather (it’s been dark and rainy all weekend) to photograph them. So, I promise to post more in the coming days!

…and so it begins in this neck of the woods!

Welcome to the first post of this neck of the woods! My name is Claire and I’m a graphic designer from Australia. Last year my partner and I decided it was time to embrace our inner nomad, packed up our belongings and headed off to see the world.

Thanks to some careful planning and a lot of luck, we now find ourselves living the German life, close to the tri-border of Germany, Switzerland and France. Neither of us speaks much German which makes for some fun times!

I have created this blog as a space where I can share my German experiences, as well as any ideas, designs and inspiration that come up in my day-to-day life here. I also love to create things in my spare time, so will hopefully be posting about them as well.

Enjoy!
